Synopsis

It begins with a marksman. A single, impossible shot reopens a matter everyone believed closed and announces that the most dangerous players in Hamilton’s world have not gone anywhere. From the seventeenth of January to the end of July, the cases come hard and various — a forged thumbprint, a cipher of dancing figures, a vanished schoolboy, a harpoon, a row of shattered busts, a stolen document that could topple a government — and every one of them turns on the same question. What does it cost to act on what you know? Hamilton has always known more than he says; this is the season in which knowing is no longer enough, and each case forces the price of acting into the open. Wilson, for once, understands the theme while he is still inside it. The Blank Sheet is the series’ return to full strength and full danger.

Wilson’s shoulder has healed. The chain document is nearly complete. And a marksman has come back to Boston.

From a cold January to a July reckoning, the long design that has shadowed Henry Hamilton’s cases comes to a head. Charges will be filed. Records will be made to bear weight in the world. And everyone who chooses to act on what they know — Hamilton, Wilson, and the adversaries on the other side of the paper — will pay something for the choice, and insist afterward that it was right.

Both things, as usual. That is what the account is for.

Elegant, suspenseful, and emotionally exacting, The Blank Sheet is a novel of testimony, retaliation, and moral consequence. The eighth volume of The Adventures of Henry Hamilton, it brings the series to a deeper, more dangerous register—where knowledge is never neutral, action always has a price, and even the most carefully built silence can be made to speak.
