Synopsis
A coded warning reaches Pinckney Street before the body is found: a man at Wellstone House is about to die, and someone inside the organization that ordered it wanted Hamilton to know. By the time Hamilton and Wilson reach the estate, the warning has already come true — and the corpse at the center of it is not quite who everyone believes. What begins as a country-house killing opens downward in two directions at once: into the present-day machinery of a criminal network that launders its work through shell companies and respectable firms, and into the buried history of how one man came to be inside it. Behind both stands an adversary Hamilton has felt at the edge of his cases for years — a mind called Mordaunt — and a consultant named Renner who knows more than she will say. The Wellstone Warning is the series’ deepest descent into organized wickedness, and the case in which the floor beneath the fog finally becomes visible.
Elegant, suspenseful, and charged with mounting dread, The Wellstone Warning is a modern gothic puzzle in the great detective tradition. The fifth volume of The Adventures of Henry Hamilton, it is a novel of ciphered warnings, inherited violence, and the terrifying difference between being warned in time and being warned too late.
