Synopsis

Marcus Carmody investigates the impossible.

He does not believe easily. He does not dismiss easily either.

When a retired colonel summons him to Low Wenfold, an isolated moorland house with a history of grotesque apparitions, Carmody expects exaggeration, fear, perhaps a trick of architecture or weather. What he finds is worse: a dog terrified beyond reason, a new wing built over an ancient barrow, a heatwave that will not break, and a crawling figure with a face no human being should be able to make.

But the haunting of Low Wenfold is only the beginning.

From a hidden temple in the Shan Hills to a murder on Dartmoor, from a family riddle at Wraycote to the ruined laboratory of Hollow Locke, from Cairo’s old streets to a white camel crossing the desert at night, Carmody follows cases where folklore, crime, science, and the supernatural refuse to stay separate.

Sometimes there is an explanation.
