Synopsis

Thea Sandoval was in the room when Tobias Rennick was murdered.

She saw him open her father’s locked cabinet. She saw him read the single sheet of paper inside. She saw the curtain move and watched him fall.

But Thea is deaf. Her processors were off. And she never saw the killer’s face.

For Detective Molly Sutherland, the murder inside a wealthy Kalorama family’s century-old home presents an impossible witness and an impossible crime. The safe was opened without force. The weapon belongs to the household. Everyone close to the victim has something to conceal—including Thea, who removes a broken brass tag from the body before the police arrive.

Then Sutherland begins looking at the one person in the house who seems to have no secrets at all.

As the investigation reaches beyond the Ferrar family into immaculate résumés, discreet household placements, old money, and older records, Thea realizes that the killer has made one fatal assumption:

That a woman who cannot hear is a woman who cannot witness.

But Thea has spent thirty years noticing everything people assume she misses.

And someone in the house is about to discover just how much she has seen.
